"The Dice-K Era Is Under Way"

This past Friday night, Red Sox Nation got its first look at a man who the front office was so confident in that they ponied up over $103 million to secure his services for the next six years.

There's a new sheriff in town, and his name is Daisuke Matsuzaka.

There was a festive atmosphere at Professor Thom's pub last Friday in Greenwich Village. Dice-K was all set to make his first appearance in a Boston Red Sox uniform, and the bar went all out to make the place feel more "Japanese." The game against Boston College was broadcast on NESN, or at least the innings that Dice-K would be pitching would be shown (three total innings were eventually shown). A nice crowd turned out for the 6:05 start, with a lot of my friends coming directly from work.

The bar offered Asahi beer at discount prices, with shrimp chips in bowls around the bar. Right after the game started, my buddy Chris, one of the bar owners, handed out sake shots to anyone who wanted to indulge. (I'm not into hard liquor myself, but I thought, what the heck, and went for it. The sake wasn't bad at all.)

All the Red Sox fans were excited at seeing the Legendary Dice Man for the first time. And on his first pitch, a Boston College player named Johnny Ayers lined his first pitch down the left field line for a double. The reaction by the bar was a mixture of disbelief and comic relief: "Get him out of there!" and "Can we get our $103 million back?" But Dice settled in, and BC got Ayers to third, but Dice stranded him there with a strikeout.

In all, he threw 25 pitches, 19 for strikes and three strikeouts in two effective innings. The Red Sox went on to win easily, 9-1, but that of course, wasn't the story. We all watched as NESN's Tina Cervasio interviewed Dice-K through an interpreter after his two innings. But in the bar, my buddy Stew, who was born in Japan and speaks fluent Japanese, translated his words even before the interpreter could. So that made a funny ending to a memorable first night.

It was just against college kids, but it was a good way to get Daisuke's feet wet. He seemed confident and mixed his pitches well. He will get his first look against major league competition on Tuesday afternoon when he faces the Florida Marlins in Jupiter, FL.

We were all excited to see the man who the Sox were so confident in they spent nine figures to bring him to Boston. There's an exciting new pitcher in town, and it could be the start of something very special at Fenway Park, for the next six seasons.

It was also very good news to see Jon Lester in his first game action of the 2007 spring in a "B" game against minor leaguers of the Minnesota Twins on Monday. Lester threw just one inning, and just eight pitches in retiring the first three hitters in order. Lester has made a remarkable recovery in getting back to game action since he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma last August.

No one knew what to expect from Jon Lester this spring, as he went through chemotherapy last fall. But he has shown an incredible toughness and promised he would be back. No one could know just how much he could have after getting a clean bill of health earlier this year, but now all signs look good right now. Lester figures to start the year in Pawtucket. He was rushed to the majors last year, and the Red Sox would be wise to let him progress at his own pace this year. If he's ready for the majors early in the year, that would be a great added bonus.

But of course, the main thing is that Jon Lester, at the age of 22, is healthy and can continue to have a productive life, and hopefully as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.

We're all pulling for you, Jon.

It's good to have you back.

I thought many of you would like to see a complete TV schedule of all Boston Red Sox games spring training games, especially for those of you outside New England. So, here it is:

Lester Pitches 1-2-3 Inning In First Appearance

(AP)

Lester, who had been slated to throw just one inning, retired each of the three batters he faced on ground balls. Three of Lester’s pitches hit 89 miles per hour and one hit 90 on the radar guns of the 18 or so scouts that were on hand to watch him and Twins starter Sidney Ponson. He threw two curves in the dirt at 69 and 72 mph.-Article

Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed one hit over two scoreless innings Friday against Boston College in his Red Sox debut. The hit -- a double -- came on his very first pitch of the outing. The FIVE things I hate about Red Sox Fans.
(Yes, I know I am one of them. We can all hate parts of ourselves!)

5) I hate the way that for years (Essentially the entire 1990’s) there were no other Boston sports teams in the minds of Red Sox first fans. (Personally, I’ve always been a Patriots first kind of guy.) It didn’t matter that anything else was happening in Boston sports. If the Bruins traded 5 players, or Pitino was busy dismantling years of infrastructure, it was second page news behind the revelation that Mike Greenwell had taken a dump. Today’s biggest culprit?- NESN.
4) I hate the 3400 different blog sites about the Red Sox and every aspect of each player and the length in centimeters of their facial hair. These guys wouldn’t use your T-shirt as toilet paper if there was nothing else around. Yet, the players are treated like Gods, no matter how many times they can think that act like sh*theads and use the excuse that I am just being me. Do we really need to have all these blog sites? Yes, I am aware of the irony, that Bornintoit.com is a semi blog site! The difference is that what I have to say is relevant.
3) I hate the way that Red Sox fans are portrayed by TV, movies, and other mediums. Are we really all live and die by a baseball team? Would we really sell our first born or have our nuts cut off for a World Series ring on a bunch of random free agent’s hands? Also, although we may be drunk, rowdy, and irrational, we aren’t all bumbling idiots, or idiot savants for that matter (IE Good Will Hunting). About the only thing that is portrayed accurately is our distain for the Yankees. By the way, when is the last time a good Yankee player became a Red Sox player in free agency? Jim Leyritz does not count. Seriously? There must be fine print in the Yankees contracts that mandate that Yankee players who leave as a FA, and end up with the Sox must return every penny that they ever made from Big George’s vault.
2) I hate the way that free agent ______________ is the next greatest thing since sliced bread. Jack Clark is the next coming of Christ. Keith Foulke is the answer to our closer quandary. Coco Crisp is going to be better then Johnny Damon. I understand that almost every team tries to share and shape optimism around it’s teams off season moves, but only Sox fans could try to put a positive spin around losing one of the greatest closers of all time- Lee Smith, and gaining one of the biggest disappointments- Tom Brunansky. If you are wondering, yes, I am still bitter about that trade. If you just landed on Earth from planet X, you’d think that Dice K was a 10 year major leaguer, who had won 158 games last year. The fact of the matter is that the guy has pitched ZERO major league innings.
1) I hate the fact that Red Sox fans absolutely must watch every single inning of every game. For Criminy’s sake, it is freaking baseball. Your son’s baptism is more important then catching the 93rd game of the season- a road night game vs. the AAA Royals. I understand the fanaticism around football, college football, and MAYBE even NASCAR. But you flat out don’t need to park your Old Milwaukee swigging, Newport Light smoking rear on your hand me down from grandma 56 year old couch to watch every friggin pitch. Baseball may just be the least interesting, and captivating sport ever invented. Why do you think FOX baseball coverage spends about 45 minutes of their 4 hour telecast videotaping the fans? Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that you can only watch major leaguers picking their noses between pitches on the bench so many times before the lens is going to explode?

"Never a Dull Moment"

Spring training is finally underway, with just about all players now reporting to their respective camps. And, as it always seems to go with the Red Sox, there's always some controversy going on, even if Opening Day is still over five weeks away.

There are two big "distractions" going on right now: Curt Schilling and Manny Ramirez.

We all assumed that this was going to be Curt Schilling's final major league season. He said some time ago that when his contract ran out after the 2007 season, he would finally hang it up as he wanted to spend more time with his family. But a couple of weeks ago he said that he would return for the 2008 season, and it was his family, ironically enough, that convinced him to continue playing beyond this contract. At the time he said he hoped that he and the Red Sox could hammer out an extension of his current deal.

Schilling made a big public pronouncement of this in an interview on WEEI radio in Boston. That certainly is the Curt Schilling we've all come to know and love. But since then, the Sox front office has announced that they do not wish to extend Schilling's deal right now. He turns 41 later this year, and the extension he's looking for (at $13 million) is one that Theo and company are reluctant to give right now. (I really think they looked at what happened with Randy Johnson and the Yankees, so they are treading very cautiously.)

It would have been in everyone's best interest if Schilling could have kept quiet about this and done this at the conclusion of the year, but that simply isn't Schilling's style. He has also said he will not negotiate during the year, so he will definitely become a free agent before he decides where to go for 2008.

I have to agree with the front office's actions as it pertains to Schilling. He had a fine comeback year in 2006 from the 2005 season that was simply a lost year when Schilling came back from ankle surgery. The question now remains will Schilling continue his comeback now that he has crossed the age of 40. I think a wait-and-see attitude is the best course of action in dealing with Schilling. If he comes back strong in 2007, I'd sign him for 2008 as soon as this season concludes. He of course, is amenable to that. I just wouldn't gamble on a pitcher of Schilling's age with $13 million now, no matter what he has accomplished in the past.
I think Schilling will have another good season this year. He's certainly motivated to, so I think the gamble the front office is doing is a wise one.

And of course, it wouldn't be spring training without having another Manny Ramirez soap opera to deal with.

The Red Sox tried to give Manny his wish for the 657th time and trade this past winter, but the teams with the most interest simply weren't a good trading partner for the Sox. They simply weren't going to give Manny away, as it would hurt the Red Sox lineup immensely (and David Ortiz in particular).

At the beginning of spring training, we heard from Manny's good friend and spokesman Julian Tavarez that Manny was in good spirits and was ready to play for the Red Sox. But earlier this week, Tavarez announced that Manny's mother has just had cancer surgery and he asked the Red Sox for permission to report on March 1. The team granted him permission (the final date for position players to report is February 27). Then there was a media report that Manny was scheduled to appear at some car show in New Jersey this weekend. Of course that would certainly not look terribly good if Manny showed up to it, but eventually the team announced he wouldn't be attending. (I guess somebody obviously got to him.)

All of this gives Ramirez' detractors plenty of ammunition. The Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy, everyone's favorite sportswriter, wrote an absolutely scathing story about him last Sunday.(CHB basically said he laid down and quit on the team last September.) But know that he maybe a "distraction" for the media and the fans, but to his teammates, he is essential to the Red Sox success. He is generally considered a good teammate and not the egomaniac of say, Barry Bonds. They'll take his guaranteed 35 HRS, 120 RBI and .300 batting average any day, as will all of his fans. Manny is probably like many veterans who find spring training just too long, and wish it would be cut shorter. (But we sincerely hope is mother is doing better though.)

It should be some media circus on March 1 when Manny finally reports to camp.

Before I conclude this column, I thought I'd let you all know that one of our one-time favorite former Red Sox players has been shooting his mouth off again: Johnny Damon.

Judas is running his big mouth off again about the Red Sox, basically calling them a bunch of cheapskates for letting him walk away last year and allowing the Yankees to grossly overpay him that $52 million contract last winter.

I guess he's sees the big contracts the Sox gave to Daisuke Matsuzaka, J.D. Drew and Julio Lugo and couldn't help himself but put his two cents in on why he should still have been in a Red Sox uniform today.

The Red Sox at the time simply were not going to give Damon more than a four-year, $40 million deal to stay in Boston. Everyone, including most of Red Sox Nation, agreed that giving Damon the contract he eventually got from the Yankees was crazy and that the Red Sox shouldn't do that type of money. The Yankees were desperate for a centerfielder, and couldn't make a trade for Torii Hunter or any other quality CF out there, and were not going to open the season with Bubba Crosby out there (despite what Brian Cashman said at the time). So the Yankees made him a $52 million offer for four years. (Why did they go $3 million per year better than the Sox and not say, $1 million?)

A $40 million deal was simply not good enough for Damon, so he basically took the other higher offer and went to New York. He's a businessman like any other baseball player. (And don't forget, the Red Sox signed him as a free agent from Oakland in 2001.) But I lost a LOT of respect for him and his slimy agent Scott Boras for taking this deal and not giving the Red Sox brass a chance to even match it. (Remember Larry Lucchino found out about the deal from the media?) This isn't to say that the Sox would have matched it (and I don't think they would have), but Judas and Boras showed absolutely no class at all in not giving the Red Sox that opportunity. They should have at least had the Sox say to them, "We can't go that high, good luck in New York." But they did not. So he snuck off to New York, like the Baltimore Colts in 1984 leaving in the middle of the night for Indianapolis.

So once again, here is Damon yakking about the Sox, and probably deep down wishes he was still in a Red Sox uniform but would NEVER admit it. (At least not until after he retires. I GUARANTEE you that after he's done, Damon will give the inevitable interview about "the worst move I ever made in my career was leaving Boston." Not signing with New York, leaving Boston.) As far as I'm concerned, he took his legacy, wrapped it up in 52 million pounds of dynamite, and blew it sky-high. If having more money means more to him, so be it.

I would bet that most Yankee fans are getting pretty tired of him talking about his old team as well.

You took the money and went over to the Dark Side, Judas. I hope you and your additional $12 million will be very happy together.

Now just stop whining about it.

"Dice, Foulkie and The Carpetbagger"

Pitchers and catchers began reporting for the Red Sox this past Friday, and despite the cold weather in the Northeast, it's time to start getting excited about baseball for 2007. The Truck left Fenway on Monday, on the same day that Daisuke Matsuzaka reported to camp in Ft. Myers, four days early.

Let's play ball.

I thought I would comment in this column (this is my 150th for Bornintoit.com) about two former Red Sox pitchers and one about to pitch for the Sox for the first time, all of whom made news this week.

The Daisuke Matsuzaka Travelling Circus came to town in Ft. Myers on Monday, and it will make the 2007 regular season one of the more memorable ones in Red Sox history. Dice-K arrived with a whole contingent of Japanese media chronicling his every movement. Get used to this Sox fans, as this will be a staple of this season, especially on days when he pitches. His first game should be covered like a presidential election, and his matchup with the Yankees should be just as enormous. (I can just picture all the flashbulbs going off on the first pitch he throws to Hideki Matsui.)
It will be interesting to see how the Dice Man adjusts to life in the Major Leagues. The Sox have been very accomodating to him, as they made a smart move by putting his locker in the clubhouse between Jason Varitek and Hideki Okajima, the other Japanese pitching import, who be a lefty out of the pen. (Dice-K has always called Tek one of his idols.) Sox management has gone as far as do things like print business cards in English and Japanese (but that maybe more to get in the good graces of the Far East baseball market as opposed to anything else).

Matsuzaka in past years has handled the pressure of playing in Japan very well, but he is now no longer the big fish in a small pond. He handled all the press on his arrival in Tampa very well, something of which he is used to. We'll see if he keeps that big smile on his face throughout the course of the grueling Major League season.

On Friday, Keith Foulke, one of the heroes of the 2004 Red Sox postseason, and "One of the 25," walked into Cleveland Indians camp at Winter Haven and told team officials that he elected to retire, and that he was forgoing a $5 million, one-year deal to be the Indians closer. It has been rumored that Foulke was once again having problems with his right elbow that has given him such trouble over the last two seasons. So at age 34, Foulke decided to shut it down permanently.

He had a superb season in 2004, his first as Red Sox closer when they signed him as a free agent. He gave the club a dependable stopper, but his 2004 postseason will live forever with all Red Sox fans. His workload from Game 4 of the ALCS to the final out in the World Series was simply enormous (10 days, 183 pitches). It is one of the more incredible pitching feats in ANY postseason:

Game 4 (Oct.17)- 50 pitches
Game 5 (Oct.18)- 22 pitches
Game 6 (Oct.19)- 28 pitches

Game 1 (Oct.23)- 36 pitches
Game 2 (Oct.24)- 19 pitches
Game 3 (Oct.26)- 14 pitches
Game 4 (Oct.27)- 14 pitches

Of all those pitches he threw (next to the final one he threw to Edgar Renteria), the final pitch of Game 6 of the ALCS is the one I remember most. The Sox were up, 4-2, with 2 outs and 2 on and Tony Clark at the plate with a 3-2 count in the bottom of the ninth. This moment was downright scary (and it still is even as I write it!). This had one of those "unlikely Yankees to kill the Red Sox" moments written all over it. Foulke was pitching on fumes, and had walked two hitters in the inning. Foulke snuck a fastball by Clark, even though it wasn't "fast" by most standards. And I'll never forget the pure joy (and relief as well) that erupted in the Riviera Cafe (where I was watching the game) when Foulke got that last out.

Many believed that Foulke should have been the MVP of the World Series, as he saved three of the four games.(Manny Ramirez was voted MVP by the writers.) He was probably the co-MVP of the postseason, along with David Ortiz.

2004 and 2005 were both years to forget for Foulke, as injuries took their toll on him, and his perceived sour attitude led many fans to turn on him. (Remember his infamous "Johnny From Burger King" remark?) He wanted to take another shot at closing and figured going to Cleveland on a one-year deal would be the best thing for him.

But his elbow problems reemerged, so Foulke has decided to walk away from the game. I can only wish Keith all the best in his retirement, and thank him for a lifetime of memories in those ten amazing days of October 2004.

Well, at least Keith Foulke knew when to walk away from the game.

The pathetic "dog and pony show" that is The Roger Clemens Retirement Tour took another turn when The Carpetbagger now says that he is now "80% certain" that he is leaning towards retiring and not coming back for the 2007 season.

I know I'm not alone in this assessment, but I wish this idiot would finally call it career and be done with it. Enough of this "maybe I will, maybe I won't" nonsense. Clemens has lied and alienated fans at all four of his Major League stops, and I'm beginning to think he won't retire until he no longer has a pulse.

Most of you know Clemens' "rap sheet" from Boston, Toronto, New York, and Houston, so I won't list it all here now. He maybe a first ballot Hall of Famer, but also a first-class liar and con artist, and if he told me the sun were coming up tomorrow, I'd get up at 4 AM just to see if it were true. (Remember after he won his 300th game in New York in 2003 he announced, "I'm 99.9% sure I'll retire after the season?" And now he's only "80% certain?" I don't like those odds.)

This jackass isn't one of my favorite baseball people (how can you tell?), but enough already. I REALLY hope he doesn't wind up back in Boston. He had his chance years ago to make amends to the fans of Boston, but obviously money means more to him than his legacy (see also: "Johnny Damon"), so that ship has sailed already.

If he was going to pitch again, he would be smart to stay in the National League, as it's much more a pitchers league, and the AL East is loaded with tough lineups. Clemens right now is no more than a six-inning pitcher who will be 45 in August. Even he comes back in June, who knows how much he'll have left.

Clemens has accomplished everything he possibly could in his baseball career, so why would he come back yet again? Only one reason: another huge payday. It was criminal the way he jerked the Astros around last year, but they fell for his BS and had to live with it.

I wish Clemens would end all these shenanigans and just call it a career already. Just do us all a favor and go away and enjoy your money. Or maybe he just likes to enjoy antagonizing both Boston and New York fans with all this spectulation?

Five things the Red Sox must do right now……

5) Be prepared to have Wily Mo Pena start 80 games in right field.  The JD Drew signing is one of the most baffling deals I think I’ve ever seen. The Red Sox were right to have the insurance and shoulder clause in the contract.  You have to question the integrity and brains of a guy (of course his jerk agent Scott Boras helped convince him), that passes up a guaranteed 33 million dollars to test the waters of the market.  I also find it amusing that the Red Sox were bidding against themselves.  None of this matters now.  All that is relevant now is that the Sox have a contingency plan in the outfield for the 80 games Drew will miss, and the 15 that Manny cries about needing a day off.
4) Stop announcing every time DiceK drops a wet fart. I don’t give crap about this guy, the language barrier, the fact that he walks like a penguin, or what color glove he wears. I truthfully don’t want to hear another word about him until he throws a pitch.  The media blitz around him, may be worse then when Ichiro arrived a few years back.  I recommend a moratorium on anything DiceK related, until his first start in April.
3) Put Jonathan Papelbon back as the closer.  Really.  The Red Sox have 1 experienced closer on the roster. For some reason they insist on putting that individual as the 3rd starter.  Epstein and Francona have admitted that the biggest issue facing the Sox going into the season is the bullpen. Well sure it up and put Papelbon as the closer. How many blown games into the season do you think it will take before Papelbon is closing again? 5? 10? What month? May? June?  Does anyone out there remember the 2005 season?  How many games were blown by Keith Foulke?  I fear that this lesson is going to have to be learned twice, and learned the hard way
2) Start plans for a new ballpark NOW. Stop putting lipstick, rouge, eye shadow, and mascara on this almost 100 year old pig.  Do I love Fenway? More then any other stadium in the league. Does it warrant 100 million in renovations, and ticket prices that the average family cannot afford. Hello No.  I’ve been to over 20 ball parks around the country, and Fenway, at this point, is the equivalent of the Buffalo Bills Stadium.
1a) Resign Keith Foulke now that he is available!! Ha.
1)  Stop trying to add guys that have 100 million dollars (Helton) left on their contracts that are injury plagued. Can someone please tell me what is wrong with Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis on the corners?  All Lowell did last year was finish in the top 5 in doubles in the league and play solid defense at the hot corner.  Youkilis is a rising star who I believe is going to have a break out year.  Their combined salaries this year, don’t even touch what they would have had to pay Helton.  I believe in Epstein, and know he is a good GM, but sometimes I think he consults Isiah Thomas and Danny Ainge before trade talks surface.

MLB Slaps Fans In The Face

We called our local cable company to order the MLB Extra Innings package and have been informed that it is not available.  This most likely means the deal between MLB & DirecTV has been consummated in some fashion.  Thanks MLB for shutting out a lot of your long time fans and not leaving them the choice between satellite and traditional cable.  So you fans out of market either have to watch from your computer on MLB.tv  or switch to DirecTV.  If this affects you we recommend contacting your local Congressional representative and letting them know we need more choices not less choices and that MLB is in violation of the Antitrust Exemption!

John Kerry To The FCC:

I am concerned about access to television programming. I find disheartening the increasing phenomenon of exclusive carriage deals and vertical integration in the media industry that have one result – the business firms get wealthy and consumers have fewer choices – and fewer sports fans having access to their favorite teams.

I understand Major League Baseball will soon cut an exclusive deal with DirecTV that will eliminate out-of-market baseball packages for Dish and Cable subscribers. I hope I am wrong, because this is audacious move. It will mean that out-of-market baseball fans that pay for a premium package to see their team will lose access to those games.

That is wrong. Major League Baseball and DirecTV need a reality check – more eyeballs, not fewer, on your games enhances your sport, strengthens fan loyalty and serves the public. I am interested in the Chairman’s views about this. I want to look at this entire picture – there are other practices in the industry that are equally disturbing. We need to take a look at the carriage system to ensure consumers are protected and independent programming is supported.

The Wrong DirecTion

Major League baseball is about to step back in time and alienate lots of dedicated fans.  They are working on or already have worked a deal with DirecTV to have the exclusive rights to broadcast Red Sox MLB Extra Innings.  This means anyone that is out of market will have to switch to satellite cable, specifically DirecTV to watch most Red Sox games.  This is a serious step back in the philosophy to "Get In The Game" and many people don't even have an option to switch to DirecTV (many complex's don't allow it and some simply cannot get the signal). - More information on this deal.   Out of Market?  Your options will be to watch the games on your computer at MLB.tv or switch to DirectTV.  We will keep you posted on this deal.

"The Truck Is Coming Soon"

I hope you're all doing well out there in Red Sox Nation this winter, no matter where you live. It was a shame to see the Patriots miss the Super Bowl, but with football coming to a close, you know what that means.

Here comes Pitchers and Catchers.

The Red Sox have made more than their share of the sporting news the last few weeks, so I thought I'd comment on a few of the moves (or "non-moves") they've made recently.

The long national nightmare over the status of J.D. Drew finally came to an end, after seven long weeks. It was all over the wording of his contract, as the Red Sox were a bit worried about the surgically-repaired shoulder that Drew had fixed in 2005. The Sox can void the final two years of the deal if Drew spends a certain number of days on the DL in 2009. The deal is similar to the ones the Detroit Tigers gave to both Ivan Rodriguez and Magglio Ordonez. The Red Sox can also void Drew's contract if it also happens in the fourth year of the contract. The first two years of the deal are a standard guaranteed deal.

I've always been in favor of picking up Drew (and I've always been in the minority on that). The only reason I had any reservations about it was if they were going to sign him while trading Manny Ramirez. Since Manny is staying (for the forseeable future, however long that will be), the combo of Drew, Ramirez and David Ortiz can be one of the best 3-4-5 lineups in the game. Of course, Drew comes with a lot of baggage from his days in St.Louis, Atlanta and Los Angeles. But I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is a very good outfielder with decent speed. But J.D. better get off to good start in 2007 or things could get ugly for him at Fenway for him in one quick hurry.

Curt Schilling announced last week in an interview on WEEI radio with Gerry Callahan that he has decided to come back for another season in 2008, thus scuttling his original plans for retirement after this season. Schilling said that his wife and children talked him into one more season (and it ends any speculation about him running for the Senate in Massachusetts in 2008 against John Kerry).

Callahan asked him about who he'd play for after 2007, and he said he hoped it would be the Red Sox. Schilling is a free agent after this year, but said that he would not go to the Yankees if the Sox couldn't sign him. Here is what he said to Callahan about the subject:

"Where I'm going to play beyond 2007, I hope it's Boston, but I will go out and find a home to pitch,” he said. “I hope it's here but there's also that possibility [of pitching for another team]."

Would he consider pitching for the Yankees in 2008?

"It wouldn't be in New York,” Schilling told host Gerry Callahan. “No. I could not make that move."

Of course it brings back memories of a certain former Red Sox star (I don't have to mention names here) who flat out said in May 2005 that he wouldn't be going to New York either. Once again, Schilling has earned the benefit of the doubt from me, but in the game of baseball, you never say never.

Schilling also said that if the Red Sox didn't sign him to an extension by Opening Day, he would not sign during the season and would definitely become a free agent. Does this remind you of another superstar pitcher that Red Sox had just a few short years ago who eventually left as a free agent?

I'm trying to figure out why Schilling went public with this when he did. Wouldn't it have been better for Schilling to have done all of this very privately and not let out that he was going to play another year? Of course, asking Curt Schilling to be quiet is like asking Rosie O'Donnell to be quiet. It just ain't gonna happen.

The other big news from Red Sox camp the last week was that a trade for Colorado first baseman Todd Helton had fallen apart and was not going to happen. I was definitely NOT in favor of trading for Helton. He is still a good hitter, and draws a ton of walks and is still a good first baseman.

But his power numbers have dropped dramatically the past two years. He hit just 20 homers in 2005, and 15 in 2006, all the while battling back troubles. (And historically, power hitters who leave Coors Field see the numbers go down in their next stop.) Helton is also 33 years old, and has five years left on his current contract, and is owed a whopping $90.1 million. It was the Rockies who initiated talks with the Sox about Helton, as they have two quality, young players in their farm system they want to bring up while getting rid of a gigantic contract that was eating up their payroll.

Colorado was willing to eat about $35 million of that $90 million, but their trade demands were too much for the Sox' liking. The Red Sox were supposedly going to deal Mike Lowell, Julian Tavarez, and possibly two other young pitchers (names mentioned included Craig Hansen, Manny Delcarmen, Daniel Bard and Clay Buchholz) for Helton. Ultimately, it was too much for the Red Sox to give up. Remember, the Sox weren't the ones dying to make a deal for Helton. (And I love some of these Yankee bloggers I read in the days after the trade went down. They were acting like the Yankees had dodged a bullet that the trade didn't happen, and that the Sox had "blown" this trade. Typical.)

However, as spring training commences, the rumors about a Helton deal are sure to surface again, as the Rockies will once again try their hand at moving their popular first baseman. But you know that if it ultimately is done, it will be for a price far less than the ones rumored last week. But I honestly don't think it will come to pass.

As I write this, it is about 20 degrees outside, as the winter finally showed up here in the Northeast. I hate the cold, as it just depresses me terribly. But I always try to keep a nice warm and fuzzy thought in my head at this time of year.

"How many days until Truck Day?"

An unfamiliar feeling

So this is what it's like to lose a big game.

Patriots get a taste of their own medicine in 38-34 Loss

Pats lose to the Colts….Season is sadly over

-Please accept my apologies for not being more thorough in this analysis. I am not quite sure how to verbalize my uncanny desire to actually compliment the Colts on a nice comeback, in what was surely one of the greatest football games I have seen in person.

-The scene in Indy was insane. The playoff atmosphere was in full force. I have to give it to them; their crowd made for the loudest stadium I have ever been in. Almost every single person had a jersey on. (Of course, being inside and 70 degrees helps with the ability to wear a jersey and be comfortable vs. 20 degrees, snow, cold, wind, and freezing testicals.)
-I was very impressed with the way that the Patriots handled the crowd noise with their silent snap count. Only 1 illegal shift on Reche ‘I peed down my leg all game’ Caldwell was called on the offense regarding formation/motion. (Speaking of Reche, what the hell was going on with him? Did he leave his hands back in San Diego?)
-The greatest news from yesterday as a Patriots fan was the signing of Cam Cameron as Dolphins head coach. Cam would be the offensive genius who let the best running back in the NFL touch the ball 6 times in the second half of last weeks game. Cam would be the same offensive coordinator that let Tomlinson touch the ball 6 times in the 2nd half WHILE LEADING the game. Super news for Pats fans. Bring in the offensive genius who doesn’t know how to use his offensive weapons.
-The next game that has 3 offensive linemen (Yes, Klecko to me is a lineman- he wears number 61) score 3 touchdowns will probably happen in 2042
- Kudos to the refs for somehow keeping their whistles in their pockets for 58 minutes of the game, and then calling an illegal hands to the face penalty as Manning was gently brushed on the side of his helmet.
-One benefit that I can definitely see If Manning can move on and win the Super Bowl would be that we could finally stop listening to the douche bags on ESPN continue to have the Marino, Jim Kelly, Manning comparisons as great QB’s who couldn’t win the big game. Hey ESPN- get some friggin original discussion points.
-Speaking of ESPN, how’s this tidbit. Peter King on CNNSI recalled an interview that he had with Michael Irvin during his playing days. Mr. Cocaine himself had King follow him after practice to his interview location of choice.- At a local strip club with a dancer on his lap. ESPN employee Michael Irvin at his finest! Not that I have anything against strip clubs, I don’t! But when you have the opportunity to slam Irvin’s character, you take it. ESPN also has on their staff numerous coaches who were fired or had recruiting and NCAA violations on their resume. Congratulations on continuing the moral decency of your redundantly redundant programming. I prey a competitor comes along and slams the door shut on your monopoly.
-Banter overheard in the bar by me, my wife Stacie, and my buddies Mike and Tony who accompanied me to the game. “We’re the new dynasty”. This was uttered by a Colts fan to his buddy. Can someone please explain to this dolt what the word dynasty means? I can tell you what it doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean a team that escaped its nemesis by 4 points in the final minute of the game and having a total of one Super Bowl victory 37 years ago.
-Stay tuned for Amsey’s new off season articles. We are coming up with something new- be sure to check the site frequently.
