Sox shopping Millar? Mets may be interested in more of our 1B runoff

The Mets had two scouts at Camden Yards yesterday, perhaps to watch Millar. New York has struggled to find a regular first baseman, with former Red Sox Doug Mientkiewicz, Brian Daubach, and Jose Offerman among those seeing time . (Article link above)

Sox lose to O's

Downed 9-1, Palmeiro 6 RBI Day

Don Hyslop- Scotian Scratches

All is well in Red Sox Nation, well as we near the all Star break everything seems back to normal in Red Sox land. There are squabbles going on in the clubhouse, the press and media are stirring up hornet's nests and fans are calling for players heads.
Did we really win the World Series for the first time in 86 years?
The comments of Johnny Damon are much ado about nothing. He didn't have all the facts, felt that Schilling was better for the team as a starter.( which he is)Nuf ced! Players upset that Clement and Timlin were not on all star team. Well what is news there? Of course they and others might be upset especially if they had bonus money tied into it. Millar upset he is losing at bats, so what. There are numerous papers,TV stations and radio outlets all trying for an angle so they won't let it rest. Last night on the UPN 38 pre-game show Bob Lobel announced that Kevin Millar would be traded this weekend. Theo had to contact them and tell them hogwash!! On and on it goes, people crying for Bellhorn to be dropped, Kapler to be brought back etc ,etc. My lord, Kapler was not even hitting his weight in Japan. He is not the answer. If Theo's plan is to gradually introduce youth into this team I for one am all for it. Look at Baltimore last night who were using a player from AA to pitch and who was getting the ball to the plate at 97 mph. Hello,we have someone like that who also has a great curveball, Manny Delcarmen. Also Papelbon and Lester are at least as good as that fellow. Let's give Adam Stern a chance. This 25 year old young Canadian will never pull a stunt like Payton. He can run and throw better than Kapler and if he can hit half as well as he did in AAA he will be more than enough.
Is it enough to win in Boston? Maybe not but that is part of the fun isn't it. We are all baseball experts and could all do Francona's job better than him. But please don't forget we are in first place!

Friday 7/8

Bloody Sock or dipping sauce for your french fries?

Skip Bayliss has his doubts:

I don't doubt Schilling was so hurt he shouldn't have been pitching in the ALCS. But I'll always believe that was fake blood on his sock. Come on, the spot didn't get bigger or browner, as it should have as he pitched deeper into the game. It stayed the same ketchup-blot size.-Bayliss

Thursday 7/7

Game washed after Six

Sox downed 3-1 in rain shortened game

Lots of questions about Francona's choice of lineup tonight.

''I don't think he's ready to be our closer," Damon said of Schilling. ''I think Bronson [Arroyo] or Timlin are the choice as the closer. - Johnny Damon on Curt going to the Pen

Canada Day Celebration

Don Hyslop 7/1/2005

Well our Nation's 138 birthday celebrations have come to an end in Hantsport, Nova Scotia. Early this morning I got into my car and drove the 50 minutes or so to get to where this parade was to take place. Upon arrival, I was treated royally by the person who had initiated this plan to put Red Sox fans from across the province on a float to commemorate the Red Sox World Series victory as well as Canada's birthday. He offered cool refreshments to all of us to put us in the mood for this event. Soon upwards to 20 noted Red Sox fans from all over Nova Scotia had arrived and we made our way to the parade's starting point.
Well the float was great, the back drop was the Green Monster and other Red Sox images were along the sides of the flatbed truck. I took my position next to the Green Monster and the parade was soon in motion. Not only did we have author Jim Prime aboard we also had the ghost of Babe Ruth with us.
As we began to wind our way through the main streets of this town which probably has only a couple of thousand people, it was not too long before we realized that there were at least ten times that number lining the streets. Maybe they had heard there was going to be a Red Sox float in the parade. Little did some of us realize, however, that when we agreed to take part in this event the organizers also had two people aboard whose duty it was to use their high powered backpack sprayers to drench all those in the crowd who were wearing Yankee hats or clothing at the event. Needless to say there were quite a few of those kind and needless to say they got a little damp as the float passed by. All in all though we were greeted by cheering from the vast majority of spectators as we passed. My job on the float was quite simple, all I had to do was make sure the CD of the Standells was constantly cranking out " Dirty Water" as we made our way along the hour long route.
After the parade we all went back to the organizer's house, enjoyed a couple of cold ones and shared our favorite Red Sox stories. Jim Prime obviously had the advantage there having met dozens of players and having authored several books including one meant for stories called "Tales From the Red Sox Dugout". I was really taken, however, by the oldest fan among us who told us about his first visit to Fenway in 1951 where he saw a pitcher's duel between Mel Parnell and Allie Reynolds which unfortunately ended with a Yogi Berra home run. Another great story was from a noted former amateur baseball player from Nova Scotia who on a recent trip to Boston was fortunate enough to run into Curt Schilling. He mentioned to Curt that a friend of his was suffering from ALS and was going downhill very quickly. He asked Curt if it might be possible for him to e-mail a message of support to this person. He gave him the e-mail address of the person and they both went their ways. Upon arriving home, the person was elated to hear that his sick friend had already received a message from Curt and was extremely pleased about getting a sincere message that was filled with sincere caring, hopes and prayers.
Well after a few hours of trading tales and mentioning the website, I got in my car and made my way home because I didn't want to miss any of tonight's game as it is being shown on UPN 38, which we get here in Nova Scotia as part of our cable or satellite package.
All in all a very enjoyable day here in Red Sox Nation North, where thousands of Red Sox fans were still celebrating last October's win. To top it off a Sox victory tonight would be really appreciated.
As we have had a Happy Canada Day, I wish a Happy Fourth of July to all my friends in the U.S.A.
