NOTABLE QUOTES

"I'm so happy. I'm happy for the fans in Boston, I'm happy for Johnny Pesky, for Bill Buckner, for (Bob) Stanley and (Calvin) Schiraldi and all the great Red Sox players who can now be remembered for the great players that they were."-2004 Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling

"A hundred years from now, how will we make people understand what just happened here? How will we ever make them understand what happened The Year The Red Sox Finally Won The World Series? There was no way they could ever do this the good old normal way. Never. They're the Red Sox."-Jayson Stark, ESPN.com

"We wanted to do it so bad for the city of Boston. To win a World Series with this on our chests -- it hasn't been done since 1918. So rip up those '1918' posters right now." -2004 Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar

"I dreamt about this day. I said my prayers every night to the big guy: 'Bring us a World Series."-Johnny Pesky, former Red Sox infielder after WS victory

"More Random Thoughts About 2004"

I thought I would break from my usual format of talking just Red Sox baseball and share some thoughts I have about this baseball season that is about to come to a close, as well as my choices for the major awards and the World Series.

Without question, Barry Bonds is the player of this generation. He's a first ballot Hall-of-Famer and one of the greatest players of all time. However, I don't agree that Bonds IS the greatest player of all time. Until he can come in and pitch shutouts, my choice for that title is still Babe Ruth. (It's really unfair to compare anyone to Ruth.) But I also have to admit I have never been a fan of Bonds at all. His prima donna attitude, posing at the plate after home runs, and his critical statements he made about the city of Boston earlier this year have put me off totally. I remember when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were having their famous chase of the home run record in 1998, someone (and I can't remember who) said that they were glad McGwire and Sosa, two great players and good guys, were the ones going for it. "Can you imagine if it were Barry Bonds, having to root for him?" Three years later, that scenario unfolded.--- Read the Full Article

BEING A WILD CARD WARRIOR IS FINE!

Fahgeddaboutit..... We are not going to win the division.  But big deal, making it to the playoffs is something to be proud of.  This isn't hockey folks, only the 4 best teams from each league make it and over the course of 162 games finishing 3-5 games back doesn't make the team that won the division that much better, it's only really significant when you don't make it to the post season. We also beat (INSERT EXPLICIT NICKNAME) in the head to head this year so if they want to hold a division title over your head that should be the automated response.  We made it and should be damn proud:)  We got a pitching staff that has been shaky at times but if they can put it together in October we got the best chance in the A.L. to make the dance!  We are in it to win it and I am looking forward to celebrating in the streets for months to come.

Drinks in all of November & December will be on us!..(Ha, ya right)

"Random Thoughts Heading Into October"

brooklyn, new york sox fan

As the 2004 Major League Baseball season is about to conclude, here are some of my thoughts about the Red Sox as they head into October.

It's been quite the roller coaster ride for the Red Sox this season. A terrific April, mediocre May, June and July, and a hot streak from mid-August through September to put them into the playoffs. Curt Schilling has clearly established himself as the Red Sox number 1 pitcher and ace of the staff. His worries about pitching in Fenway park were proved to be groundless, as he went 12-1 at the Fens. Pedro Martinez has had basically a good season, but he clearly isn't the same pitcher he was. He's given up 25 home runs, which is the number he's given up over the last 3 seasons combined. Will he be back with the Sox in 2005? My feeling is that he will be. But with Pedro, you never can tell what he's thinking. (I think all that "their my daddy" stuff with the Yankees may just be a clever psychological ploy by Pedro. Then again, maybe it isn't.) -- See the full article

Yeah of course losing two of three to the Yanks is a tough one to swallow but we have made a great run and are positioned for the playoffs, that is what is important.  We still lead the season series 9-7 and have a chance this coming weekend to save face a bit.  We will make the playoffs and we have a team that can do some damage regardless of how it appeared Saturday & Sunday.  It's only two games and not then end of the world. "We Don't Throw at .260 Hitters!"

On July 24, 2004, the Boston Red Sox were mired in what had become a three month long mediocre funk. The Yankees had beaten Curt Schilling the night before at Fenway, and a promising season seemed like it was about to slip away. The Sox needed to make a statement, not just to the Yankees and the American League, but to their fans and to the baseball world at large.

In the top of the third inning, Bronson Arroyo hit Alex Rodriguez with a pitch that was up and in. Rodriguez didn't take kindly to being hit, and let Arroyo know in no uncertain terms what he thought of it.

But Rodriguez couldn't get close to Arroyo if he felt like settling the issue like men. The heart and soul of the Red Sox was standing in his way. The man Red Sox Nation refers to affectionately as "Tek".

Jason Varitek was originally a first round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners in 1994. He moved up quickly in their system, but never did play for the big club. The Mariners in 1997 were in the middle of the AL West pennant race, and were having some terrible bullpen problems. They desperately needed a closer. The Red Sox were going nowhere in 1997. General manager Dan Duquette saw an opportunity to acquire Varitek, so he offered closer Heathcliffe Slocumb to Seattle for Varitek and pitcher Derek Lowe.

A lot of people put the knock on Duquette for time with the Sox, but this turned out to be one of his shining moments. It is generally considered to be his second best trade (after Pedro Martinez), and an outright swindle.

At the start of the 1999 season, number one catcher Scott Hatteberg went down with an injury, and Jason Varitek took over behind the plate. He hit twenty homers that year, and since then the Red Sox have never looked back.

Without question, Tek has become the heart and soul of the Red Sox. He became one of the premier defensive catchers in the American League, and a true warrior. He's played hurt, with grit, and with determination. In early 2001, he made a spectacular diving catch against the Tigers near the Red Sox dugout and wound up breaking his right elbow. He had 7 homers at the time and was having a breakout season at the plate. The Red Sox never recovered from his loss in 2001, and was out of the playoff picture by August.

It took until the 2003 season for Tek to regain that form. He hit 25 home runs and 85 RBI (both personal highs), and was one of the leaders of the "Cowboy Up" gang that took the Sox all the way to the League Championship Series.

At the start of the 2004 season, he was one of the four major free agents on the Sox who could walk away after the year (along with Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe and Nomar Garciaparra). In a couple of  preseason polls I saw, the fans agreed that the one guy the Red Sox HAD to sign of the four was Jason Varitek. On Baseball Tonight on ESPN earlier this year, Peter Gammons reported that in a poll taken among major league players, Jason Varitek was voted "the guy most likely to become a manager one day".

He is the unofficial team captain of the Sox. On July 24, he proved it beyond all doubt.

As Rodriguez was running his mouth off with expletives directed at Bronson Arroyo, Varitek stepped in front of him to get him to move down to first. Rodriguez directed his barbs at Tek, and basically challenged him to "bring it on". It has now become an "urban legend" that Tek said to him, "We don't throw at .260 hitters!". Tek then gave him a face full of his glove, and both benches emptied. The Red Sox went on to win the game, 11-10, coming from five runs down to win on Bill Mueller's dramatic ninth inning home run.

Most Sox fans look at this game as the turning point of the 2004 season. Varitek, already the most well-respected of Sox among the Nation, was lifted to near god-like status after it was over. So did he really say "we don't throw at .260 hitters" to Rodriguez? He says he didn't, but it really doesn't matter. Let's pray the Sox do the right thing and sign Tek before he gets the chance to get away.

Red Sox Nation thanks Alex Rodriguez for not going quietly to first base.

And for having the heart and soul of the team, as well as the unofficial captain, behind home plate.

Buyer Beware

No doubt it can be very stressful to be a Sox fan.  To get the rundown of the last 86 years of joy & pain you can go here.  Season after season they give us hope, they make us feel like this is it, this is the year that we can lift that weight off our shoulders & release the burden that has plagued us for generations.  We have a lot to be proud of right now. We should be very excited about the remainder of the season and should feel confident we have a great team, if not the best team in baseball heading into the playoffs.  Yet I know you all have that feeling of doom. We have been through too much to not have in the back of our minds that something is going to burst our bubble.  There is a ceiling on the joy that we can feel towards this team. It is like a girlfriend/boyfriend that you caught cheating on you a couple of times- you must keep your guard up. You should wear those sunglasses that came out a few years back with the rear view mirror built into them.  Don't let yourself get too comfortable because if you totally give yourself to this team and they let you down it is going to hurt, it is going to hurt real bad this time around.  I am not writing this to be a pessimist or to say that you shouldn't celebrate how things are going right now. I am just trying to say "buyer beware".  Beware that there is the possibility that you are going to fall down hard and your bruises this year may be beyond repair.

Take it for what it is worth, it had to be said.

Nine Inning From Ground Zero, Tonight on HBO

The tragedy and horror of the 9/11 attacks triggered a host of changes in America, including a reassessment of the role of sports and its accompanying hero-worship. Batting averages and home run totals were no longer paramount, particularly in New York, but in fall 2001 baseball played a significant role in the city's recovery efforts. HBO Sports revisits that remarkable and inspiring phenomenon when the documentary NINE INNINGS FROM GROUND ZERO debuts TUESDAY, SEPT. 14 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

"September 11: Never Forget"

By John Brian Quinn,  jbq1462@hotmail.com

The 2001 Boston Red Sox season will not be one that will fondly be remembered by most of their loyal fans. The Sox got off to a good start in April and hung with the Yankees for most of the summer. Hideo Nomo, in his only Red Sox season, pitched a no-hitter in Baltimore in his first start. Manny Ramirez hit 41 home runs in his first season after signing an eight-year, $160 million contract the previous winter. Trot Nixon hit 27 home runs and established himself as a bonafide team leader.

Bronx fans giving us some love?

As much as I hate Yankee fans as a whole.  They do have some very reasonable & knowledgeable baseball fans in their party.   In fact some are not scared to admit their concerns about the Red Sox this season.  I am a long time reader and recent poster on NYYFans.com, mainly to see the other side of the scoop and to add my 2cts to some of the threads.   I have to bring a current post to everyone's attention giving some props to the Red Sox and of course a lot of trash talking.  A fun Read!

Another Reason to be a Yankee Hater!

I mean c'mon now, the Tampa Bay D'Rays have travel problems getting to NY yesterday and miss the first game of a double header due to a Tropical Storm and the Yankees respond bye asking Selig for a forfeit of the game.

`"We were here, ready to play. The Devil Rays weren't. If, in fact, they didn't want to come here, they should have said it last week, but they didn't tell the Commissioner's office that. They told the Commissioner's office that they were trying to get here when they weren't. The rules say that if your team is here and ready to play, and the other team isn't here and ready to play, there should be a forfeit."  Randy Levine said during a press conference.

Must they give us another reason to hate them? They are making it too easy for us.
