"I'm so happy. I'm happy for the fans in Boston, I'm happy for Johnny Pesky, for Bill Buckner, for (Bob) Stanley and (Calvin) Schiraldi and all the great Red Sox players who can now be remembered for the great players that they were."-2004 Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling

More from

"Two Moronic Nitwits"

10/29/2004

My friends in Red Sox Nation, I hope you will indulge me in the following. I know many of you in New England have never heard of them, but we have an afternoon drive team on the New York sports station WFAN named "Mike and the Mad Dog". They have gained a large following here, and are also simulcast on the YES Network. Over the last few days they have said a few things that really angered me about the Red Sox. I decided to wait until the World Series victory ended before I retaliated.-

A little background first. Mike is Mike Francesa, a diehard Yankee fan and pal of Bill Parcells who usually takes much pleasure in bashing the Sox. He is generally a pompous windbag who believes everything he says is the gospel truth. Mad Dog is Chris Russo, a San Francisco Giants fan who can't help but put his foot in his mouth just about once a show. He has this scratchy voice that sounds like sandpaper and at times he can be almost incoherent. His painful lack of sports knowledge comes across way too often for someone hosting a sports talk show. The only reason he has a show in the first place is that he acts so outrageous that his bosses believe he actually brings listeners to sports radio. His only redeeming feature is that he is huge Yankee hater.

Redemption

If there were one word that you could pick to sum up the Red Sox miraculous 2004 season, what would it be?  For me, its redemption.  The Red Sox have made up for all of their past demons, the Curse of the Bambino, and all the goats of post-seasons past…even Buckner!  Ok, well maybe not Buckner.  A brick has been lifted of the chests of all of Red Sox Nation, from Boston to San Diego to Alaska to Japan.  Red Sox, we have forgiven you for the torturous 86 years you have bestowed upon us.  What you accomplished this season was something short of a miracle.  I couldn’t have scripted a better way to beat the Angels and the Yankees and then take out the brooms and sweep an offensive juggernaut that won 105 games in the regular season is redonkuless. (Bornintoit.com Editor note- Iddler makes words up as he goes)

I think all of Red Sox nation is as tired as I am right now but no one cares.  I would have stayed up for 30 straight days without food or drink and without clothes or shelter (except a Red Sox hat) to witness this. I don’t think it has fully set in yet.  It will probably take a few days to fully set in.  I am still so shocked by everything.  I am checking ESPN.com every 10 minutes to make sure this is reality.  Hold on, yup it still is true…I just checked again.

My whole life I have been hearing the stupid 1918 and curse banter at Red Sox-Yankee games.  Now it will cease.  What is it going to be like at Fenway or Yankee stadium from now on?  What is it going to be like to not be jaded for the winter months?  To not hear “At least we have the Patriots.”  What is it going to be like to not have to deal with fake, asshole Yankee fans?  I’ll tell you how it will feel…..UNBELIEVABLE.  Ladies and Gents, the curse is lifted.  We won the f*cking World Series.  Say it…..we won the f*cking World Series!

Before I go on I need to apologize to all of you.  After we were down 0-3 to the Yankees I completely lost faith.  I thought the Red Sox were the most miserable and cursed team in the history of sports.  I was so hurt and upset that I sat down to write my season ending article.  Let me tell you, the tone of the article I wrote was 100% different than this one.  This article is much more fun to write.  If you check my previous articles you will see since the beginning of season I was saying this is really the year.  I constantly wrote about Ortiz. I will never lose faith in this team ever again even if they are down 0-3.  Just think, every time a team is down 0-3 we will hear about this comeback.  We will constantly be reminded of this post season run, the heroics of Curt Schilling, and the perseverance of the Red Sox, not the curse of the Bambino and 1918.  I firmly believe that curse has been transferred back to the Yankees in the form of Alex Rodriguez.

I am sure I wont even get everything out in this article right now because there are so many emotions I haven’t tapped into yet.  So do expect an addendum to follow.  Hang on, need to check ESPN again real quick.  Woooh, ok.   Anyway, as I sit here pretending to do my job, I can’t stop thinking about how this website transformed into a mountain from a molehill.  I think all of the supporters of bornintoit.com need to thank Ryan (CEO of the site) for his hard work and dedication.  Send him an e-mail, buy a T-shirt, a hat…something to show your support.  He ran this site from the ground up.  Thanks man.

I would like to digress from the Red Sox right now, if that’s possible, to announce something that I am very proud of.  It’s actually the only thing that is worse than my friend Barry’s fantasy football team.  What I am talking about is the methane fart I just dropped at this computer terminal.  If you were next to me right now you would probably faint.  I have to run before someone pins this to me.  Iddler will follow up.

18 Moments to Remember

-Contributed by Reader Mark Tansey

The 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series Championship run was truly a 25 man effort.  This was not the 2002 Anaheim Angels who hit their way to a World Series title.  Nor was it the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks who were carried by Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson.  The Red Sox won the World Series because they had more depth in starting pitching, a deeper bullpen, and more key players who could come off the bench to provide speed and defense than the Angels, Yankees and Cardinals.  --Full article

Parade Information

"Number Six"

On the night of October 27, 1985, I was on a plane flying from New York City to London, to visit some friends in England. I had just watched in the airport bar the Kansas City Royals demolish the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh game of the World Series. Shortly into the flight, the pilot announced that we were about to fly over the city of Boston, Massachusetts. I looked out the window of the lights of the city, and I remember telling the man next to me that "my favorite baseball team plays in that city". I also thought of the Royals just winning a title, and I wondered when I would ever see the Red Sox win one.

Nineteen years later to the day, that dream finally became a reality.

And ironically enough, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

At 11:39 PM last night, something everyone one of us dreamed about for years and years (and some for decades and decades) finally came true. Edgar Renteria's comebacker to Keith Foulke concluded 86 years of heartache and disappointment. I witnessed it all from my usual watering hole, The Riviera in Greenwich Village. The place was jammed two hours in advance of game time, and I was nervous all day. Leading 3-0 was great (and better than leading 2-1) but a loss on this night would lead to the specualtion of the Cardinals pulling a 3-0 comeback like the Sox did to the Yankees. I just wanted the World Series to end in four games.

LIBERATING A NATION

After watching the post game press conference after game 2 last night, I had one immediate thought. We are going to win the World Series.  Suddenly it was all clear. This is destiny. This is finally The Year.

We were never going to win game 7 last year. Pedro could have come out in the 6th, and we still would have lost. We weren't meant to win. It wasn't time yet. The manager was wrong, the clubhouse was wrong, even the NL team was wrong. The Red Sox were not going to play their first world series in 17 years against the Florida Marlins. No way, No how. "Because Eric Clapton is God", she wrote.

THIS IS THE REASON WE HAVE FOLLOWED THIS TEAM SINCE WE WERE BORN INTO IT.

Tonight I watched the Red Sox seal the deal on an unprecedented 0-3 comeback.

Tonight I danced in the Bronx on their steel bleachers.

Tonight I pumped my fist in front of 55,000 distraught fans.

Tonight I  spit on Monument Park for everyone that reads my site.

Tonight I left my trash under my seat and even kicked it around a bit.

Tonight I listened to Yankee Fans regurgitate their usual lines and I finally had the comeback that one upped them.

Tonight I gave high five to other brethren of the nation, even hugged, maybe a kiss or two I can't remember as I am still in shock.

Tonight I watched the Red Sox Spray Champagne near their dugout in celebration.

Tonight I sang New York, New York by Frank Sinatra at the top of my lungs, because it is their song and I wanted to let them know that we now own them

"SPIRIT HEART & GUTS"

10.20.2004

Last Saturday night I left the Riviera Cafe and Sports Bar in a terribly disconsolate state. I had witnessed one of the worst losses in Red Sox history. I stayed for the entire game, even after many of the patrons had long since given up hope and departed.

Down 0-3. I couldn't believe it. A postseason filled with so much hope seemed to be going down the drain once again. Midway through Game 3, I was so angry I wanted to throw something. Then the depression started to seep in. They were losing another postseason series to the Yankees, and this time in humiliating fashion.

Going home on the subway, I zipped up my jacket to hide my Red Sox jersey. At that time I was not terribly proud to be wearing it.

Boy, what a difference 72 hours can make.- Read the full article by John Brian Quinn, Brooklyn Sox Fan

Bornintoit.com: What made you choose that one?

Curt: Well it looked good with my jacket, and Shonda thought it brought out the color of my eyes.

Bornintoit.com: Yeah, I really like the fur around the top, that is so trendy nowadays.  Are you a trend setter Curt or do you usually see what is hot then kind of jump in on the fad?

Curt: Well I am a bit conservative but I just had to have this boot, It had my name written all over it.

THIS WEEKS AMSEY ANALYSIS

WEEK 6 2004

NEW ENGLAND 30 SEATTLE 20

20 Straight Wins

10- I believe that the Seattle attempted comeback was directly correlated to the lack of blitzing that occurred in the 3rd quarter and early in the 4th quarter. Early in the game, when the backfield got noisy, Hasselbeck was flustered and forced into errors. Late in the 4th quarter, including the intentional grounding fling by Hasselbeck, the Pats brought the house. Belichick took blame for some of the blown plays.

Give Ya Something to believe in!

They Love Me, They Love me Not, They Love Me, they Love me Not, They Love Me ....

Tie it in the 9th! Win it in the 12th Win a Shot by Big Papi.

Late Innings Recap:

Dave Roberts Comes Up Huge in the 9th as he steals Second Base with No Outs and Mueller at bat. Billy Mueller comes up just as big with a single up the middle to score Roberts and tie it in the 9th. David Ortiz HR in 12th the big winner!

Pitching is solid:

Derek Lowe does a good job on the mound keeping us in the game-5.1, 3ER, 3K, 6H

(Maybe not the best run down on paper but the way the Yanks have been hitting I say its damn good)

Foulke, Timlin, Embree, Leskanic are perfect through 6.2..

Game Ball Really goes to our bullpen tonight.

Sox Still In it to Win it, Series at 3-1 Yanks

Ortiz Might get the Glory

But Roberts Pinch Run steal in the 9th May have been the difference

HELPLESS

The last time I felt so helpless I was 8, my dog spot ran in front of a pickup truck and was run over.  Last night that same feeling came back to me.

The Yankees rounded the bases last night 19 times, embarrassing our pitching staff and squashing the hope of many members of Red Sox Nation.

Obviously we are not ready to throw the towel in just yet but the mountain ahead is one that has never been climbed, four straight playoff wins after being down 3-0 would be a baseball first.

Sox to Roll without Shill For Remainder of Series, Probably for rest of season as well. -Story

KEEP THE FAITH!
brooklyn, new york sox fan
We're in trouble now.

Before the ALCS began, I thought to myself that to come back to Fenway Park 1-1 would put the Red Sox in a good position to win the series. Now at 0-2, they have put themselves in a hole the size of the Grand Canyon. If they are to win this series, it won't be at home in Boston, but back in New York next week.

So, roll out the cliche of your choice now: "When the going gets tough, the tough get going","It's always darkest before the dawn", "It ain't over 'til its over" or "One game at a time".

I keep thinking to myself that line on the billboard across from Fenway Park: "Keep the Faith".

Curt's Sore Ankle may not have giving him the push he needed off the mound, something went wrong last night. Just a crappy outing or an Injury?

The Sox did put up a good offensive fight when Mussina slowed down in the 7th, putting up 5 Runs to Make it 8-5 including a 2 Run Shot by Varitek. Big Papi tripled in the 8th and its 8-7. Sox bullpen couldn't do their job and let up two more pretty much tucking us in for the night and reading some Dr. Seuss as Mariano in the 9th up by two slams the door.

Ortiz Triple in 8th was just the chance we needed. Brought us within 1..

And was that Double by Williams in the 8th a Catchable ball by Manny?

I saw it on TV and it appeared that it could have been fielded by someone with legs.

amsey analysis, pats recap Thoughts while the Pats go for 19 in a row (While no one in the locker room even thinks about it for 1 second…..)

10) I was a little surprised that in the 2nd quarter when Drewbie looked like the Drew of old and was picking the Pats apart, Romeo continued to send a 4 man rush, and keep 7 in coverage. As soon as they started blitzing, Drew became my favorite character, Mount Sackmore, and the tide turned heavily towards the Pats.

OK, fellow Red Sox Nation members. You wanted a rematch with the Evil Empire, you got it!

In the week leading up to the start of the ALCS, I talked to many Nation members and wanted to see how they felt about who they'd rather see the Red Sox play in the ALCS. Most of them said they wanted the Yankees, mostly for revenge from last year, and also because it would be so much sweeter to reach the World Series having put the Yankees away. I certainly understand their feelings and I really do agree with them on both counts.

Let’s be honest.  We, as Red Sox fans, have been through quite a bit this season.  We came into spring training riding “sky high” expectations.  Our club had signed Curt Schilling, Manny was back and looking happy, Ortiz was coming off his best season ever, and the face of our franchise Nomar Garciaparra was anchoring short.  This felt like our best chance at breaking the curse…evah!- full article

3) Patriot fans should count their lucky stars that we have Tom Brady.  Watching games around the league on Sunday, and watching quarterbacks miss open targets consistently, really shows how talented Tom is. (Even if he didn't play his best on Sunday.)  The most impressive thing about Brady, is the way that he steps back up into the pocket.  He doesn't panic, and he doesn't run to the outside where he would surely be brought down.  He trusts his line to give him the time to find someone downfield. The anti-thesis to Brady would be Fiedler, and to an even great extent, Bledsoe.

"Two Down and Nine to Go"

brooklyn, new york sox fan

Before the American League Championship Series started this past Tuesday afternoon, I made myself one promise. I was determined to watch every game at my favorite New York City watering hole and Sox-friendly establishment, The Riviera (or as we regulars like to call it, "The Riv").

Outside of Fenway Park, there is not a place in this world I would rather watch a Red Sox game at. I knew there would be a crowd there, and I was set to get there early. But even this surprised me. I got there one hour early and the seats at the bar were already gone. The crowd filed in to just about capacity before the first pitch was thrown. I found my buddies Riff and Charlie at a table in the very back, so at least I had a little breathing and elbow space.--- Read the full article from Brooklyn Sox Fan!

Damon Hits Home In More Ways Than One

Johnny's Got Style!

Johnny Damon has become somewhat of a cult icon around the country. Is it the hair? Is it his smile? Is it his easy going fun loving personality? Or is it the commercials and other media exposure he has received?

Either way Damon has become one of the most if not the most reliable all around player on this team.If I had to pin point one player that really represents the 2004 Boston Red Sox, Johnny Damon would be my guy!.

We love you Johnny, you got some serious style!

Twins had Yanks Down & Out and let them climb back to win it in 12th

Don't be shy to admit that you are secretly rooting for the Yankees.

I will come out and say I would rather face our demon's head on.  I want revenge and I want to win it right through them.  Let them beat the Twins so we can do it the way we always dreamed. Nothing wrong with picking this path in a choose your own adventure

It's asking for a heartache but no guts no glory is how I see it.

*If for some reason we do not beat the Angels then this does not apply, in that case seeing them advance further than us will be torture!

Read Bill Simmons Latest Rumbling.. A Solid Article

She cuts you once, she cuts you twice
But still you believe
The wound is so fresh you can taste the blood
But you don't have strength to leave
-- Billy Joel

You can only feel so involved in a pennant race when you're 3,000 miles away.

Here in Southern California, some Sox fans frequent Sonny McLean's, a neighborhood bar in Santa Monica that shows every Boston game. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you're home again, if only for a few hours. Almost like one of those "Total Recall" experiences that Quade had. Maybe I don't stop by Sonny's that often, but I like knowing it's there. You never know when you might need a Boston fix.- Bill Simmons 9/29

Error- We had stated this article was by Peter Gammons, Apologies as it is clearly a Bill Simmons writing, Gammons-Simmons.. What I had for breakfast.. Its all a bit hazy now and then..sorry:)
