"A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever"

I'll bet many of you are like me. When a certain year is mentioned by a friend, on TV, or read in the newspapers, an event or events that occurred that year will instantly pop into your mind. It can be either positive or negative. For instance, when I hear "1969" I think of the moon landing and the Miracle Mets World Series championship. "1994" I think of the year we didn't have a World Series. "1977" I think of the death of Elvis Presley, the New York City blackout and the year I became a Sox fan. And "2001" I think of one terrible Tuesday morning in September.

Sugar Plum thoughts while wondering what ESPN could possibly over-hype now that the Lakers-Heat game has come and gone, and Manning broke the record.

-ESPN markets itself better then anyone, even to the point of annoying. But it works; I was there like all the other suckers in the country watching what was actually, for the NBA, a rather entertaining game. What I could have done without was the 23 days of hype surrounding 1 game, and the countless Kobe stories. Hence my name for Sportscenter- Lebroncenter or SportsKobe.

Not for now at least!

WHAT KILLED THE DEAL?

The Yanks and Diamondbacks had already agreed in principle on the terms of this deal. One source close to the transaction even said that the mega-deal was definitely "moving." One major reason the trade was complicated: Johnson, Penny and Green all have had surgery or serious injuries over the past few years. There needed to be extensive physicals before any trigger was pulled. Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta backed out of this deal Tuesday. Early reports say that the trade might have failed due to Vazquez's refusal to play in L.A. ABOUT BASEBALL will keep you posted as more news becomes available.-

-Vazquesz refused to play in LA -Michael Dowd, About.com

Also rumored that Fashionista's in New York somehow hooked up with Vazquez to kill the deal as they feared there could be a potential  comeback of the Mullet- unconfirmed

WEEK 15 2004

NEW ENGLAND 28 MIAMI 29

Thoughts while wondering if Charlie was designing plays for Brady Quinn…..

- My job in this article is to point out the discrete non-obvious points about the prior Patriots game. Discussing Brady’s below average performance would be obvious. What was shocking to me was their play calling on the ‘kill the clock drive’. Yes, 1st down throwing was a good call; the 2 minute warning was coming up. Running on 2nd down was a good call, and the Dolphins used time out #1. But throwing on 3rd down, albeit not predictable was a terrible decision. The Dolphins pass rush was mounting by each down played, and forcing them to use their 2nd time out, it would have given them about 1:30 seconds to move the ball the length of the field. Not for a FG attempt, but they needed a touchdown, would have only had 1 timeout and they have AJ freaking Feeley at the quarterback position. C’mon Charlie. Run the ball.
- The 1984 Buccaneers looked sharp. I mean the Dolphins. Shouldn’t there be a rule that orange jerseys are not allowed outside of Arena or World League Football?--

The Jeff Allison Story

He was Peabody's golden boy, a can't-miss pitching prospect from Little League to high school to the day he was the top pick of the Florida Marlins; But then a greater force -- drugs -- threatened to steal Jeff Allison's dream, and his life.

Part One Drugs threatened to steal this pitching prospect's dream, life12-12

Part Two Reclaiming his life, and his life in baseball 12-13

Oxycontin is a powerful, highly addictive drug that will ruin your life!

It is expensive, will degrade your health, isolate you from your friends & family, can result in suicide, painful withdrawal, and will no question completely change who you are with no mercy.  This drug has become a widespread problem in the Boston area.  This issue hits home as I have witnessed first hand the powerful affect it had on someone close to me .  If you know someone that has a problem with Oxycontin have them seek help right away. If you have friends that use Oxycontin you should reevaluate who your friends are or help them.  If you know anyone selling this drug report them to the police, anonymously if you have to.  This stuff is very bad, like nothing many of you have ever seen. Parents should look for the warning signs of this drug as it is more prevalent then you think and entering homes all over the Boston area.  This is not a "junky" drug, it is suburban and scary.

Take action and do your part to help clean Boston of this terrible problem.

"It takes you. You don't take it." - Quote in the Thomas Farragher article

"A Tale of Two Game Sevens, Part 2"

I couldn't believe they were doing this. A comeback for the ages, a comeback that would live in the annals of baseball forever, was within sight. Four days earlier, I left the Riviera totally deflated, demoralized and brokenhearted. The dream looked like it was dead for another year. Another sorry chapter in the Red Sox-Yankees was about to be written. The next night Dave Roberts stole second, possibly the biggest stolen base in baseball history. Suddenly the tables were beginning to turn.

We were alive again!

Less than 72 hours later, it was all even again. The three games I witnessed were among the most heartstopping, on-the-edge-of-your-seat baseball games I had ever seen. The tide had completely shifted in favor of the Red Sox, and the Yankees and their fans knew it. The brakes that the Sox never seemed to get were going their way. Tony Clark's ground rule double in Game 5. The two correctly reversed calls that benefitted the Sox in Game 6. Curt Schilling pitching the game of his life on a bad ankle, also in Game 6.

Now comes back with:

Red-light Curt, he loves the TV camera, is a great talent, but he's also one of the great pains in the game-plan and has never been looked upon fondly by teammates because of his self-serving antics. In typical Schilling style, he blamed the New York media for misinterpreting remarks he had made earlier in the week to stir the pot. Schilling then criticized Martinez for not being at Game 6........

Before now and the start of next season, Schilling, who has played pro ball for nearly 20 years and has had countless teammates, might want to look in the mirror to understand the reason why his baseball buddies can be counted on that gifted right hand. .-Kevin Kernan, NY Post

"Thanks for the Memories Pedro"

It was as surreal a scene as I've ever seen in my life. A Boston icon, standing next to the New York Mets manager and general manager at a Shea Stadium press conference, wearing a Mets jersey with the number 45 on it. It was the number he wore in his seven years in a Red Sox uniform. A uniform number that will surely be retired by the Red Sox one day.

Pedro Martinez, future Hall of Famer, is now gone. Last Sunday it looked almost a sure thing that he'd be back for another three years in a Sox uniform. But the Mets offered him something the Red Sox just couldn't give him: a guaranteed four year deal. -Full article by Brooklyn Sox Fan

-Deal not officially done still as reports have yet to be confirmed.

 Details soon!

FIFTY-EIGHT days ago, the Yankees sent Kevin Brown to the mound to try to beat the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS. That mistake never will be made again.

George Steinbrenner made sure of that last night as the Yankees basically locked up Randy Johnson and their 40th pennant and 27th World Series title. The deal is not officially done yet but the parade will be next October. Johnson will be sitting in the lead car.

Yankees may acquire Randy Johnson

-ESPN Reports Yankees May Have Agreed to Terms With Johnson

3 Team Deal Involving Dodgers, Arizona, NY

(Still pending Johnson & Green waive of no trade clauses)

The Yankees have reached agreement on the principal players in a three-team blockbuster trade that would land them coveted lefthander Randy Johnson, Newsday has learned.

A few details have yet to be worked out, but indications are they are not big enough obstacles to kill the deal.

The Yankees would receive the 41-year-old Johnson in the deal while sending pitcher Javier Vazquez and two minor-league prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan, to the Dodgers, according to an Arizona source. The Dodgers would send pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban and outfielder/first baseman Shawn Green to Arizona to complete the deal.

High bidder for Beltran is currently reported in the ball park of a 5 Year 70 Million deal. Boras is thinking along the lines of 200 Million over 10 years.  Any team that wants to take on that contract can go right ahead.  I would even be fine seeing him in pinstripes at that kind of $$.

One team that inquired about Beltran reported it was told it wouldn't even be considered a "serious" bidder unless it was willing to begin the conversation with a 10-year, $200-million synonym for "hello."

MLB Offers up Red Sox Nation Cards for $9.95

With a 2005 Red Sox Nation membership, you will receive the following benefits:
•  2005 MLB.com Gameday Audio.
•  2005 Ticketing Preference for the
   coolest seats at Fenway.
•  An exclusive membership
   e-newsletter
with special offers.
•  Special access to members-only
   pages
on redsox.com.
•  Red Sox Nation Citizenship Card.
•  Special members-only redsox.com
   shop offers
throughout the season.

I am not going to write that this is a marketing gimmick (pretty obvious) or a waste of your $9.95.  Yeah its a bit of a sell-out proposition for you to spend $9.95 to say you are a member of "Red Sox Nation".  If you need to spend $9.95 to prove that to yourself then send me $25 and I will get you out our new "Planet Earth Membership Card" complete with all the oxygen you can breath.  However there does seem to be some claimed benefits on MLB.Com to paying the $9.95.

How much value these benefits are will remain to be seen.  My Assessment:

2005 MLB.com Gameday Audio.- Good value here as it was $14.95 last year for game day audio Ticketing Preference-Highly unlikely you won't be fighting the other hundred thousand members for any ticketing preferences that are of value, sounds worthless. Exclusive e-newsletter with special offers- We get enough newsletters from redsox.com already, they want to send us more? Members-Only Pages.. What could they provide that you cant find here, On Prospectus pages, on Espn, Herald, Globe, on the other 100 Red Sox fan pages etc. Red Sox Nation citizen Card-  I will give it to them that the card is kind of nice looking, but it's something that would end up in my top drawer next to the discount card that used to get me $5 off the door at "The Roxy" in 1999. If I was 10 I may beg my parents for it.  Maybe this is the market they are going after?...

It is only $9.95.. So not a huge deal or worth too much of our ink. If you want the card, want to be on Redsox.com mass email list, or are going to buy game day audio anyway, then spend the 10 bucks.  However let it be known that you are already a member of Red Sox Nation and you do not need a plastic card to prove it.

-Sox & Mantei agree to one year deal

Great "under the radar" low risk, high reward signing by Theo.

Matt Mantei is expected to be a setup man for closer Keith Foulke.

Downfall: Mantei suffered from shoulder tendonitis last season in his pitching arm.

Reward: Should he stay healthy, the mix of Mantei's fast ball and Foulke's changeup should keep batters at bay in late innings. At $750,000 over one year this is a low risk agreement for the Sox.

Arbitration deadline said not to affect Sox

 negotiations

Varitek, Cabrera, Martinez, Lowe expected to be offered arbitration

Basically folks this means the Sox submit papers offering the player to accept an arbitration meeting where an unbiased third party hears proposals from both sides and rules in favor of player/club or in between.  All arbitration cases are for 1 year contracts and any player offered arbitration that signs with another club must compensate with draft picks.  Of course the Red Sox have no chance of any of these players accepting arbitration but just offering this alone allows the Sox to negotiate with these players until January 8.

NEW ENGLAND  42 CLEVELAND 15

10 Quick hit thoughts of the week from the Browns game

10)Until I am collecting a check, when I go to a Patriots game, I will get incoherently drunk, so my analysis surrounding what actually went on on the field will be weak at best.
9)I am unsure whether there were more Patriots fans or Browns fans that showed up as burnt orange empty seats at the game

8) Good job college football. You’re dangerously close to being as fixed as WWE wrestling. If every other sport at every other level can have a championship playoff, so can you.- Read the Full Analysis

In Theo We Trust!

Sox Talking with Japanese All Star Second baseman Tadahito Iguchi.

-Sox open talks with four time Japanese All Star

Don't know much about players overseas but must give props to Epstein today.  This guy continues to show that he is not leaving any stone unturned when it comes to putting the best team possible on the field. By opening up dialogues with all these free agents (must be somewhere around 20-30 last count, does Theo sleep?) he is demonstrating that he will look at every angle possible when we have voids to fill. No doubt in my mind that with this current management at the helm we will have a competitive team year after year.  It is fun to be a Red Sox fan right now.  Hats off to Theo & crew today... Gotta love it!

"Moments That Last a Lifetime"

On November 22 I got a rather mysterious email from a friend of mine I knew through the Riviera Cafe in Greenwich Village. He told me it would be worth my while coming down to the Riv to check out a DVD another friend of mine had. I knew it was a Red Sox DVD of some type.

That pal of mine had an advanced copy of the Official 2004 World Series DVD that was being put out by Major League Baseball. (It was actually being released the next day.) After we watched the Patriots win on Monday Night Football, the DVD went on.  About two dozen of us enjoyed the video tremendously, but about 70 minutes into it, I saw a sight that I could not believe I was seeing on the screen:

It was me.

Off Season Exciting!

Is it just my love for the game or is the off-season

almost as exciting as the regular season?

Free Agency

Steroid Scandals

Arbitration

Negotiation

I love it!

I also have a feeling that the Yankee-Sox rivalry hasn't peaked yet and winning the World Series has only kicked things up a notch (as Emeril would say).

My fatigues (Sox Gear) are still fresh and ready to be put back on come April.........BAM!!!!

Bonds Admits to Using Steroid Cream

Bonds testified that he had received and used clear and cream substances from his personal strength trainer, Greg Anderson, during the 2003 baseball season but was told they were the nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and a rubbing balm for arthritis, according to a transcript of his testimony reviewed by The Chronicle.

Cmon Barry Get Real!

American Public: Barry Bonds thinks you are stupid!

Why would Greg Anderson benefit from pulling a switcharoo of your flaxseed oil with steroid cream? Yeah his success as a trainer may be based on your performance but I find it a bit absurd that his intention was to impose a health risk on you without your knowledge. That is preposterous, outrageous, downright ridiculous Barry...

"THANK YOU LORD FOR BLESSING ME WITH THESE HUGE, " ALL NATURAL" FOREARMS, TRICEPS, BICEPS, QUADRICEPS, CALVES, ETC....

Fans & Media Come down Hard on Giambi

Days as a Yankee or possibly in baseball may be done

According to legal experts, Major League Baseball can't do much to punish Giambi because penalties for steroid use started in 2004, and Gary Sheffield wasn't punished this past October when he admitted to unknowingly using a cream two years ago that contained steroids. However, several people pointed to a clause in a player's contract and said the Yankees could void Giambi's because he violated the language. The deal expires after the 2008 season.

The clause reads, "The player agrees to keep himself in the best possible condition." -NY POST

Varitek, Boras, & Sox are getting

Mr. Two Home Runs in Game 7 of 2003

ALCS admits to steroid use.

It wasn't a 5 out difference anymore, it was a 5 syringe difference.

GOT JUICE?

-Giambi admits to steriod use

Only a fool (or his mother) would not see that he did steroids

This isn't profound information folks it is pretty apparent.

We know he did the Juice! Now its out in the open & exposed.

Steroid burden on Giambi's Shoulders

"My weight ... I'm only about 4-pound difference," he said, "to be honest with you."

(Add a 0 on to that and make it 40 Mr. Giambi)

The Luke Report:

The Jason Giambi bombshell is just that – a bombshell.  Not because it’s shocking that he actually USED steroids.  We all knew he did.  (And by “we”, I mean those of us who chanted “YOU USE STER-ROIDS!!!” at Fenway during every one of Giambi’s and Sheffield’s at-bats this year.)  What’s shocking is that we finally have our smoking gun, which I never thought we’d have.- Full Article
